Kendal is becoming known as a festival town, for its amazing range of events throughout the year, from the 50 year old Kendal Torchlight Carnival to the World remowned Mountain Festival and Comic Arts festivals.

There are other festivals including the Unity Festival, Wool Fest, and the County Show. Spread throughout the year, there is always something going on in our vibrant town calendar.

Kendal Torchlight Carnival

“By the people, for the people”. Kendal Torchlight Carnival started in 1970 and has always been run by unpaid volunteers.

Torchlight content has varied over the years from just 30 float entries at the very start to over 130 floats, bands, carnival, and dance troupes and other processionists at its peak.

The purpose of Torchlight is to promote Kendal and its surrounding districts for the benefit of residents, tourists, businesses and industry by organising events, shows, exhibitions and carnivals.

Torchlight prides itself on being accessible to all members of the community without exception.

A gathering for Kendal, the surrounding areas, for everyone.

Kendal Mountain Festival

Kendal mountain festival is a celebration of the outdoor culture! It celebrates films, speakers, literature, and art.

It is the most diverse festival and its kind in the world. Kendal Mountain Festival has been going since the 1980s and these days over 18,000 people head for the Lake District town each November to catch up on all thing’s adrenaline. 

The event is truly international with filmmakers, adventurers and lecturers gathering from around the world. Their aim is to inspire more people to explore mountains, wilderness, and their cultures.

Lakes International Comic Arts Festival

Kendal’s international Comic Art Festival celebrates comic art from all over the globe and the only event of its kind in the UK.

Each year the town comes alive with creativity that all ages can enjoy in venues throughout the town.

Visitors have the chance to see some of the world’s best-known comic artists and writers. Comic Arts festival features exhibitions, comic trails, performances, workshops, masterclasses, and family zone activities.
